Great First year bloomer, January 23, 2008
Submitted by ChicagoNative from Louisville

"I planted 3 of these dwarf monarda in my south facing, brutally hot and dry front bed. They performed beautifully from the tiny transplants I got.
Initially I was concerned about their size, but after a bit of babying they grew very well and bloomed multiple times over the summer.
We have had a warm winter, relatively speaking, here in Louisville and some of the monarda still has it's leaves.
I think this little plant it a great value.

The best sweet corn I've grown!, January 20, 2008
Submitted by MNGardener from Southern Minnesota

"This corn is absolutely delicious. We had about 8 5ft rows and unfortunately the bunnies got about a 1/3 of them, but what we harvested was amazing. We grilled them on a gas grill (when having hamburgers topped with the "sweet tangerine tomatoes" - also excellent) and they were perfect. Nice sized ears with kernels all they way to the end. We'll double the corn space in the garden in 2008 and fence it well so the bunnies don't get any sweet corn!!"

Fantastic tomato, January 21, 2008
Submitted by AvidGardener from Olathe, KS

"I grew the Porterhouse Beefsteak tomato this past year (2007) for the first time. I was looking for a huge meaty tomato with great taste & I found it in this tomato. I will grow this tomato every year in the future. I shared some with my elderly neighbor & he was amazed at the size, texture & taste. If you are looking for a tomato that will cover an entire slice of bread with one slice, this is the one. They are very prolific producers. I did not have problems with getting spots on them & rotting before they were ripe."

Small quantity, BIG gourds!, January 13, 2008
Submitted by playsndirt from Ossineke

"This plant was a bit of a surprise to me, as I had mistakenly planted it as a cucumber on a trellis. By the time it had flowers, I was mystified as to what it was that I actually HAD planted! I was pleased to see several little 'hourglass' shapes forming on the vines. The summer season was difficult....little rain, stifling heat, and I'm sure that contributed to the demise of so many of the little ones. But! The two that survived off of that one plant were so heavy they broke my trellis! What fun! I saved them and hung them to dry in my garage across from the woodburner, and just tonight Dremel-ed the chickadee hole and retrieved an enormous amount of seed to plant for 2008. All in all, despite my mistake and a rough life, I look forward to planting them again!"

Great herb to have, January 16, 2008
Submitted by LakeErieGarden from Lorain, OH

"This is a must have in any cooks garden as it is so easy to grow, and adds so much flavor. No way you can not grow this either indoors or out. Put some seeds outside and save some for your winter window box. You can always have fresh chives on hand."

Submitted by Prairiegrower from east-central KS

"I grew this for the first time last year. It was very productive. Easy to grow, nothing seems to bother it, it just keeps growing. Takes the Kansas heat and wind very well. You won't believe how good this melon tastes."

1st attempt at corn was a hit!, December 31, 2007
Submitted by Anonymous Reviewer from Geneseo, NY

"This was my first attempt at growing corn. We grew 5 rows of corn, and it grew fine. Some of the ears were on the small side, but we had a decent crop, and the corn was DELICIOUS! We plan on having this again in our garden next year....only more of it!"

Couldn't believe how much broccoli I got!, December 31, 2007
Submitted by Anonymous Reviewer from Geneseo, NY

"This was my first attempt at broccoli. I had always thought for some reason that broccoli was very hard to grow. After watching my friend grow some, I thought I'd at least give it a try. I grew 6 plants in my garden and I got SO MUCH BROCCOLI! Way more than my friend got with her generic brand of seed. I got one enormous head per plant, and then a large side shoot after side shoot after side shoot. My broccoli produced even after our first hard frost! I did nothing to it, other than to water well, and to put fertilizer in the garden soil before planting. And, to top it all, this was the most delicious broccoli I'd ever had! Eating store brand now is so tasteless! We froze some, but loved it so much that we ate most of our crop before we had a chance to freeze it, and the bit we did freeze, we devoured after the fisrt month!! Next year, much more broccoli in the garden!"

Great purchase-great tomato, January 1, 2008
Submitted by grannie from south east Texas

"I purchased seeds for this tomato 3 years ago & have very pleased with the outcome. Flavor in a tomato comes first with me & this one tops them all. I saved seeds from one tomato the first year & I think each one sprouted several plants as I gave family members & many neighbors plants as well as setting out twice as many in my own garden. I did the same the next year & best of all the plants have remained the same - not reverting to anything else. I have eaten them fresh, frozen them, canned them plain, & canned with peppers - all good!! The only problem I have had is they start blooming early & tomatoes don't set. I have sprayed the blooms with bloom set & once they begin setting, they continue setting. Don't know if they're not setting due to early coolness or something lacking in soil but, I'm still saving seeds to plant again."

Excellent Leek, December 23, 2007
Submitted by Hugo from Milford, CT

"This year was the first time I direct seeded leeks in my garden. I usually start them on a windowsill in late February and transplant them around early May. For a change, I decided to direct seed Burpee Dawn Giant leeks into my plot in early May and eventually thinned them to 8"-10" apart. By September, I was picking giant leeks of excellent quality. If you like leeks, you should try this variety."

Good starter eggplant, December 24, 2007
Submitted by Cyrusdust from Sandy

"I grew this eggplant for this first time this last year. My first time growing eggplant at all actually. I was a little worried at first because it seemed to take such a long time for the plant to start producing flowers. Then all of a sudden a burst of beautiful purple flowers. It was quite a site and the fruits that were produced were beautiful and so yummy. I made some yummy dishes that were much better tasting and a better consistency than the store bought eggplant. Buying some more seed for this next year and I'm looking forward to trying some other varieties of eggplant as well!"
