5 out of 5 (Overall Rating) All the News Thats Fit To Compost!, February, 15 2009 Submitted by GrandPop from Labadie, MO "I bought the pot maker because the idea appealed to me / the newspapers today are not worth reading anyway and the idea of turning tem into compost while at the same time providing a cheap way to move my starts up just made me smile. So far all is going according to plan, like the other reviews indicate. The little pots are easy to make, and are holding up to the moisture from watering very well. I will add to this review after the end of March, when I will be planting them. But if they hold up as well as they have so far, I expect to be posting a positive review."

Anyway, these grow great, look great, are sweet and crisp even when the get on the large side, and didn't appear to attract any bugs or disease. My kids love the colors!"

The flavor is also stronger. It is my favorite Swiss Chard. Here in New Jersey, we eat it from May to December."

In six weeks they were blooming, although leggy, because I did not want to pinch them back so late in the season here in Virginia. Despite the hot humid weather, these plants never showed any mildew or rust. They were a delight, although a bit shorter than I thought they would be. The individual flowers had an exceptionally long life and just shined and shined. Really such a great plant for direct sowing! Most people thought they were some type of early mum. Get them."

The flavor is superb, whether green or red. It is crisp and robust when green and oh so sweet when red. We always plant in slightly sandy soil with a little magnesium salts around the base and these plants are producing often past the first frost. Tons of fruits which often need staking if you let them turn red. As with any plant, don't over water! We only water from soaker hoses in our dry August weather and have never had mold problems. We also rotate our crops and never mulch plants that have molded in the past. A hardy plant that will over produce and have your neighbors loving you."

It took it a while to start growing but once it did, I had to cut it back almost daily. My cats just go crazy over it. This fall I brought into the house to over-winter and it'd done okay. I think if I had started a pot in the house and left it there it would have done better but the cats don't complain."

Illinois garden (zone 5) is easy but I have to take a few steps to maximize enjoyment. First, plant them near a door or window so we can enjoy the wonderful fragrance each evening. Second, try to isolate them from anything that you don't want them to overtake such as lattices or patio furniture etc... In my experience they reach out and strongly "embrace" anything within reach. This year I'm planting them in the backyard with their own support and safely away from other plants and structures. They are truly lovely and a must for any garden!"
