Best in Class-Hybrid tomato-maybe all tomatoes, August 24, 2008
Submitted by LakeErieGarden from Lorain, OH

"This is the best tomato to grow for production, disease resistance, ease of growing, taste, size and appearance that there is. Wow is this an amazing tomato! Far better flavor than the Better Boy, Celebrity and Parks Whopper hybrids> I think this tastes every bit as good, even better than Rutgers which I think is a heck of a compliment to a hybrid. If I absolutely had to choose one variety of tomato that I could only plant for the rest of my life, this may well be it. I can't get over the quality of flavor in a tomato that is this perfect in every single category. This is the best all around tomato out there, hands down. I can not do it enough justice to speak of all this tomato is."

Best in class-Hands Down!, August 24, 2008
Submitted by LakeErieGarden from Lorain, OH

"I was a big fan of the Sweet 100 cherry tomato. Was is the key word. It is still my favorite red cherry but this Sun Gold variety is the best Cherry Tomato I have ever tasted bar none. Everyone I have given it to loves it. I did not think an orange tomato would be this good, boy was I wrong. Huge, super productive plants, early producers, disease resistant and they pretty much grow themselves without any intervention to top it all off. They will crack with uneven watering but that's a small price to pay for the greatest cherry tomato of all time, bar none, hands down. I am mad at myself for not trying this before."

Best sauce tomato!!!, August 17, 2008
Submitted by CJJo from Naperville, IL

"We were looking for a large plum tomato to make our sauce making easier. We found the tomato, Big Mama. I'm sorry that other customers did not have our success. We had large, perfect tomatoes. We grew 8 plants and this past weekend harvested about 100 tomatoes. We made sauce, used them in fajitas and had them on a salad. We were really impressed. These meaty tomatoes had less seeds and lots of meat. We will grow more plants next year."

Perfect Container Tomato, July 21, 2008
Submitted by Yonatan from Jersey Shore

"If you are in an apartment or town house and have to resort to container gardening, this is a one tomato I would recommend. The tomatoes are small (about 2" in diameter maximum), but if you use a 12" diameter pot, expect a bumper crops of these meaty little guys. I have one each in 8", 10", and 12" pots, and the largest pot produced like a fiend and early!"

Fantastic Tomato!, July 8, 2008
Submitted by tribs

"This is my third year growing this variety. The first year I grew it my husband tasted one of these tomatoes on a BLT and requested that I grow this variety every year. I gave one to my dad, and he now grows it every year. I shared one with a coworker and now he grows it every year. See a pattern? This is a healthy and very vigorous plant with a good yield (even better yield if you use Bonide Blossom Set Spray). The tomatoes are fairly thin skinned with a lot of meaty inside and are not all watery like some beefsteaks. The flavor is just as intense as the Brandywine tomatoes I have tasted at heirloom tomato festivals. Do yourself a favor and try this tomato just once, everyone I have shared it with has been hooked."

They Are Early & Delicious, May 28, 2008
Submitted by Snuffy

"It's true. Early Girl does give early, very tasty tomatoes. Here in Maryland, about midway between Baltimore and DC, I get my first ripe Early Girls a little before July 15, about six weeks after the weather gets "Summery" around here. Side by side with Celebrity and Rutgers and a few other varieties, Early Girl always gives ripe tomatoes 2 weeks sooner. (I've started the seeds indoors around March 1st for the past four years) This year I got confused and over excited, and started my seeds on January 24, 2008, and they are ridculously advanced, i have two 2 inch diameter Early Girl tomatoes already! (May 28, 2008) I'll be eating a tomato by June 15 this year, Yum Yum!So always grow at least one Early Girl, because: Ripens 2 weeks earlier than other good tasting tomatoes Will grow well in 14 inch pots on a South East facing patio with about 7 hours of direct sunlight (that's how I grow 'em, less than optimal conditions) I tried "4th of July" variety one year, they ripen even earlier, but I didn't like the flavor at all."

Indispensable in the tomato garden, May 29, 2008
Submitted by jolietjim from Chicago IL

"This is the earliest, best tasting tomato I have ever grown. It tastes better than most mid and late season tomatoes, produces more tomatoes, and never stops until frost. The fruits are not as large as others, but the flavor and the quantity make up for their smaller size. No, in most places, 4th July tomatoes won’t be ready for picking on the 4th. Here is Chicago, it has been so cold, I won’t be planting until I get these plants in early June. Normally, we get our first 4th of July tomatoes in mid July. That is not too long a wait for me. We grow other tomatoes (Celebrity, Beefsteak types), but the wait is so long, the 4th of July tomatoes really insure a long tomato-eating season."

fantastic cherry-type, May 11, 2008
Submitted by dcook from Denver, CO

"I have grown quite a few variety of tomatoes from seed and these are always prolific and easy to grow. The plants get very large, over 6' tall, and the yield is impressive. These plants require support. The flavor is good. With such an incredible harvest, we had too many to eat fresh and too many to give away. I used them in my crushed tomato recipe."

Prolific and good, May 2, 2008
Submitted by Ruby711 from Sandston, VA

"Grown for the first time last year - pack of 4 seedlings from a local store. Planted in loosened compost and top soil mixed with a hit of Miracle Grow, caged in standard tomato cages & watered via drip irrigation every other day or when I remembered. They were fantastic! Sweet and more like baby romas than cherries - being on the dry-side is a plus to me. We picked an average of 40 a day every day throughout the summer until late-September. These are the only cherry/grape tomatoes that I'll have in the garden."

Excellent tomatoes, April 13, 2008
Submitted by willyb from SE Michigan

"I bought these plants last year. We had an abundance of excellent, firm, smooth, juicy tomatoes in spite of our hot, dry summer. There were still blossoms and young fruit when I pulled the plants in October. These are the only sauce-type tomato I will grow in the future. My only complaint was that I had way more tomatoes than I and my neighbors could possibly use!"

Best tomato ever, March 7, 2008
Submitted by Montana from Montana

"I tried Tomande last year (2007) for the first time and was amazed with both vigor and production. I grew 12 varieties (mostly heirloom) in two gardens and the Tomande produced 2-3 times as many tomatoes as any of the others. One garden got severely hailed on and the Tomande was the most vigorous in coming back from the hail. I canned 150 quarts of tomatoes and 60 quarts of salsa and I could fill a 5 gallon bucket at each tomande plant and it didn't look like I'd picked any. Super plant, please keep it available. Biggest Hit of Summer 2007!, February 24, 2008
Submitted by Marmoxmag from Scarborough, ME

"These tomatoes were the surprise hit of my garden in 2007. I had never tried this variety before, usually planting Burpee classic red cherry tomatoes. First, these are DELICIOUS fresh off the plant and stay fresh for a long time in the fridge. Secondly, I couldn't *believe* the yield. I truly must have had 100 tomatoes on each plant, easy. I couldn't keep up with them, and invited friends and neighbors over to enjoy the harvest. Finally, unlike the yellow heirloom pear tomatoes, these don't split when they're ripe. The pears split open the second they're ready meaning 100% blemished fruit, but these are "ripe" at a variety of shades and never split open. I'm planting again this year! :)
SUGGESTION: plant fewer than you think you'll need because of the yield."

Great Tomatoes and SO MANY!, , February 29, 2008
Submitted by Valdeth from Xenia, Ohio

"I bought these plants as seedlings from a local garden center last year. The fruit came on very early (long before my Big Boy Hybrids) and lasted all the way PAST frost. Each day I would pick 5-10 tomatoes! The flavor was a tiny bit acidic, but still excellent, despite their "roma" size, I even cut them up for sandwiches. I'd grow them again in a second."

"This is an excellent tomato. I plant it every year. It gives off a great yield with beautiful uniform deep orange color. Never had a problem with disease or blossom end rot. I plant a variety of tomatoes every year but look forward to these the most. Can eat them plain with a bit of salt for a great healthy snack. Come out a beautiful orange color when dried in the dehydrator. Almost tastes like a dried apricot when dried."

"I grew the Porterhouse Beefsteak tomato this past year (2007) for the first time. I was looking for a huge meaty tomato with great taste & I found it in this tomato. I will grow this tomato every year in the future. I shared some with my elderly neighbor & he was amazed at the size, texture & taste. If you are looking for a tomato that will cover an entire slice of bread with one slice, this is the one. They are very prolific producers. I did not have problems with getting spots on them & rotting before they were ripe."

Great purchase-great tomato, January 1, 2008
Submitted by grannie from south east Texas

"I purchased seeds for this tomato 3 years ago & have very pleased with the outcome. Flavor in a tomato comes first with me & this one tops them all. I saved seeds from one tomato the first year & I think each one sprouted several plants as I gave family members & many neighbors plants as well as setting out twice as many in my own garden. I did the same the next year & best of all the plants have remained the same - not reverting to anything else. I have eaten them fresh, frozen them, canned them plain, & canned with peppers - all good!! The only problem I have had is they start blooming early & tomatoes don't set. I have sprayed the blooms with bloom set & once they begin setting, they continue setting. Don't know if they're not setting due to early coolness or something lacking in soil but, I'm still saving seeds to plant again."

Wow! These are BIG tomatoes!, December 16, 2007
Submitted by KAmbrose from Upstate, NY

"I purchased these last season and I had some germination issues, but I think I figured out the problem. These seeds really do not want to germinate when they are chilly. I initially planted them in peat pellets and placed them on the windowsill in my office. They didn't germinate at all and other varieties were way ahead of them. I ordered another pack and planted those, but I didn't give up on my first ones. As the windowsill got warmer, I started to see little sprouts and they quickly caught up to my other plants. I grow a lot of tomatoes and give plants to my friends, family and coworkers and everyone raved about the HUGE tomatoes this produced in abundance. My father and father in law have already put in their orders for me to grow them plants this year. Well done, Burpee!"

Tomato - Tomaato, It's all good eating!, September 30, 2007
Submitted by Helen from Philadelphia, PA

"I am a Container Gardener. As the summer progresses my deck becomes a vegetable jungle. Among other veggies, I purchased the 3-plant set of Supersteak Tomatoes -instead of seeds. The plants arrived in excellent condition. In May, the plants looked so little in their large containers with big tomato cages surrounding them. It's amazing by mid-August how huge the plants have grown literally hiding the tomato cage from sight.
The flavor of the tomato is delicious. They make great tomato sandwiches! Most of the fruit grew as large as described in the catalog."
